The Chosen One*

I have chosen do make idea 2: the thriller film.
I chose this idea because I think that, although according to the secondary task Rom-Com would make the most profit, my primary research shows that my audience would like to see a horror or thriller film.
I also think that filming a thriller will give me an opportunity to create an opening sequence that is unique and different than most others in my class. This is because I have the chance to film shots using an underwater camera, which I think will make my work more interesting and exciting as most AS-level students don’t have such equipment.

Also, the location I will use will be quite unique, as I have the chance to film at a private site which includes a lake and a boathouse. This will make sure that filming is undisturbed and that no bystanders are accidentally in the background of our shots.

The Pitch*

Idea 1.
Romantic Comedy :
Man and a woman are getting married. They are at the church and as the vicar says the line from wedding vows 'does anyone object?' a man bursts through the church doors and shouts 'I OBJECT!' the couple at the alter look at each other (the man looks sadly towards the woman, the woman looks shocked) after a short pause the man leaps from the alter and bounds into the arms of the other man, they hug and kiss. The End.

Idea 2.
Thriller :
A girl and boy have a secret romantic date at a secluded lake house. The boy 'tries it on' with the girl, who abruptly turns him down. They end up in a violent fight and the boy kills the girl, in a stated of panic the boy dumps the body of the murdered girl in the lake. The End

Title: "Troubled Waters"

Idea 3.
Horror :
A girl has been cheated on by her boyfriend. She lies in a field looking hopeless, upset and ill,
loosely holding onto a picture of her now ex boyfriend. She burns the photograph and picks up a sharp knife. She slits her wrists and brokenhearted dies in the woodland. The girl’s ex boyfriend attends her funeral with his new girlfriend (the girl he was cheating with). As they leave the graveside in the background a ghostly figure of the dead girl stands, holding the knife, with a terrifyingly enraged expression.

Title: "Hath No Fury"

Secondary Task: UK Film Council

The information used on the blog post is from the uk film council webiste statistical year book.

Table 1.

The table shows that comedy movies had the highest number of releases and was the top-grossing genre at the UK box office. It also shows that comedy is the most popular genre of film in the UK that people want to watch.

Thriller was the second most popular genre; horror third and romance was forth.
However comedy has the most amount of releases, so it would be expected to make more money. In comparison thriller had the least amount of films released but it still came fifth in the rankings, so it could be argued if thriller had more releases it could have made more money than comedy.
Romance came 14th in the ranking and shows the UK public are not really into Romance if there is no comedy involved and would much rather watch thriller horror or comedy.

In comparison to horror, thriller had a similar amount of releases but ranked 10th on the list, so this shows that even though it has a similar amount of releases it did not make as much money, showing it is not as popular as comedy or thriller.

Romance ranked lowest at 14th on the list. It had 21 releases and made the least amount of money from the box office on the table. This shows that out of the four it is the most unpopular film to be made and to make money at the box office.
Therefore if you combining the research about romance films and comedy films, when making our own romantic-comedy, more comedy than romance would be needed in it in order to make more money.

Table 2.

This shows the average number of sites at widest point of release versus the number of places that the film was shown at the time of release.

Table 3

This table shows how much money was made on each site for each of the genre.
Horror came last out of the four so therefore made the least amount of money out of all of the genres. This shows that this genre was the least popular and would not make much money.
Thriller came third which made it the third least popular genre, and would not make as much money as a romantic film or a comedy film. However it wasn't far away from beating the romantic genre.
Romance was the second out of the four. The most popular out of the four genres was Comedy which made the most money and was the most popular out of the four. If I chose to create my opening sequence as a comedy the romance genre will be combined too so most certainly could be the most popular and would make a significant amount of money.

Primary Research: Questionnaire

For my primary research I deigned a questionnaire for my audience. This was so that I could decide which genre appealed to which kind of people. In turn it will make it easier to aim my film opening at that specific kind of person.

The results showed that the horror and thriller genres were preferred the most, by both males and females. Particularly in the age range 19-24. There was typically no correlation between magazines preferred and film genre, and also the same for music.

Horror's In General*

The Horror genre generally always has a threat of death or suffering within it, with an element of gore and violence. Horrors differ from Thrillers as they usually take the suspense one step further to make it into a scary film, e.g. more blood, more violence. Horror's don’t have to follow the rules or boundaries of reality and tend to have weapons that need to be used within close proximity of the victim. Music is one of the main and most important parts of the genre, if there was no music, or it was too upbeat and "Happy" then the film wouldn’t have the same effect. Main factors of horror films include:

  • Music
  • Weapons
  • Dark creepy location/normal average location
  • Victims
  • Supernatural
  • Gore
  • Blood
  • Violence

Christian Metz's Model of Genre Development*

There are four types of development in specific to the genre of Horror.
Christian Metz designed these four simple stages:

  • 1. Experimental - formalisation of narrative conventions ( The cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Nosferatu)
  • 2. Classical/Classics - defined/ practised (Frankenstein, Dracula)
  • 3. Parody - parodied (Scary Movie, Abott and Costello meet Frankenstein, Carry On Screaming)
  • 4. Deconstruction - Other elements and sub-genre's are introduced (Seven, Scream, Blair Witch Project, The Sixth Sense)
