Christian Metz's Model of Genre Development*

There are four types of development in specific to the genre of Horror.
Christian Metz designed these four simple stages:

  • 1. Experimental - formalisation of narrative conventions ( The cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Nosferatu)
  • 2. Classical/Classics - defined/ practised (Frankenstein, Dracula)
  • 3. Parody - parodied (Scary Movie, Abott and Costello meet Frankenstein, Carry On Screaming)
  • 4. Deconstruction - Other elements and sub-genre's are introduced (Seven, Scream, Blair Witch Project, The Sixth Sense)
