The Thriller genre generally always feature a strong male lead role, a woman may also be involved. Many films of the genre have been adapted from novels. They often end on a cliffhanger leading into a sequel or possibly more films featuring the same characters. Many deaths or accidents may occur before the story has concluded. Music is an important part of the genre as if there was no music, or the music was upbeat and "happy" then the film wouldn’t have the same effect. Main factors of thriller films include:
- Murders (usually seen from the POV of the killer)
- Quick cuts to increase suspense.
- Dramatic music
- Flashbacks
- Audience is usually more aware of events than the characters
- Sequences usually create a sense of passing time
